Dongcheng District

Eight Steps Coffee (Xiyingfang Hutong No. 9 Courtyard Store)

  • Hidden in a small alley
  • Delicious pastries
  • Japanese-style warmth with attention to detail

The logo of Eight Steps Coffee is full of Japanese design charm: a simple sketch of a cyclist. However, if you choose to take a taxi here, you may find yourself hesitating between two car wash shops, as the coffee shop is hidden deep in the alley. Everything in the store exudes a sense of warmth: wooden tables and chairs, rough and lovely ceramic coffee cups. On weekday afternoons, there’s usually only the sound of peaceful and pleasant music.

It’s worth mentioning that in addition to espresso and pour-over coffee, they also offer specialty drinks, Chinese tea, milkshakes, and even affogato and grapefruit slush. Moreover, the pastries provided are freshly made, and the sandwiches served from the kitchen are still steaming hot.

This is a small shop that will make you immediately search for rental prices near Andingmen.

Fenzi Coffee Shop

  • Cobalt Blue
  • Sunset outside the window
  • Warm wood tones on Anding Inner Street

Regular customers often directly order a coffee from the window and stand there drinking for a quarter of an hour. The door and windows face due west, and as the sun sets, the twilight rises, and Anding Inner Street gradually becomes busy, leaving gentle traces of changing light and shadow on the walls and floor tiles.

The menu doesn’t have many varieties of espresso and pour-over coffee, but the quality is consistently good. When we visited, there were even baristas from other shops who came to taste the coffee out of admiration. A small surprise is that you can try the less common Cobalt Blue here, which is a double shot of espresso topped with vanilla cream, brown sugar, and handmade toffee.

Phoenix Café (Wudaoying Store)

  • Old shop
  • Cats
  • White

“No matter if customers come in happy or not, we hope they leave the store happy.”

Having been open for ten years in Wudaoying Hutong, Phoenix Café exudes the atmosphere of a community store—a minimalist style dominated by white, casually arranged tables and chairs, and the owner Xiao Xian chatting with regular customers while sitting on a chair.

After several renovations, the store’s area has doubled, and a large terrace has been developed where you can enjoy the sun and breeze. The new storefront allows maximum sunlight to pour in, improving customers’ moods. The outdoor straw mats are also popular, as it’s very pleasant to sit and chat or watch people come and go in the hutong.

The playful atmosphere among the baristas makes customers more willing to open up and talk. “There may be some things you don’t want to say too much to family and friends, and a coffee shop is a great outlet.” The colleagues also feel comfortable; the pastry chef and baker have been working together for many years, and the baristas even come to the store on their days off to check in—this is probably the best compliment any owner can receive from their colleagues.

Shanhai Sihe by Jetlag Books

  • Books from all over the world
  • Poetry collections
  • Foreign magazines
  • Drink an emotional cocktail that matches your mood

Shanhai Sihe by Jetlag Books, located on Dongsi North Street, is a community bookstore opened by Jetlag Books following their Sanlitun store. 90% of the books in the store are poetry collections, along with design and art books and magazines in both Chinese and English.

It’s worth mentioning that Shanhai Sihe is not just a bookstore. What’s even more surprising is its coffee and the co-working space hidden behind the bookstore area.

Themed around six emotions—”nervousness, anticipation, focus, entanglement, joy, and ease”—Shanhai Sihe has designed 5 cocktails and found interesting associations between them and some Beijing place names. For example, the “Guomao Bridge” salted caramel latte perfectly blends salty and sweet flavors. Don’t hesitate because of the name “Time Zone Crossing” pepper ginger sparkling water; it’s very suitable for when you want a moment of refreshment.

Order an “emotional” cocktail and wander around the store, and you can feel the design ingenuity everywhere: the huge floor-to-ceiling windows directly connect with the street, making the interior of the bookstore clearly visible even if you just pass by; the long benches along the street add a sense of integration between the bookstore and the neighborhood; and the use of stainless steel rotating bookshelves to create partitions between the coffee area and the reading area, giving the space a sense of hierarchy without being fragmented.

“Connection and integration” is the feeling that Shanhai Sihe always pursues, connecting the bookstore, the world, and people, integrating modern industrial style with street features, and combining an art and culture bookstore, community café, and collaborative creative space including co-working. In doing so, Shanhai Sihe is expanding the concept of a “bookstore” in a modern perspective.

Shasha Cold Brew Garden · Hutong Outpost

  • Cold brew
  • Neo-Chinese style
  • Fresh flavors deep in the hutong

Hidden in Dongsi Sancao, Shasha Cold Brew Garden has almost become one with this hutong. You need to pass through a small door and narrow corridor to reach the store entrance, which has a sense of “winding paths leading to a secluded spot.”

The store is also filled with a sense of Zen: the floor is paved with stacked tiles; under the wooden bar counter, there are multi-drawer cabinets resembling traditional Chinese medicine cabinets; beside the gurgling water, well-growing green bamboo is cultivated…

The design and decoration of the store are all handled by the owner, Hailang. You can either return to solitary moments in a quiet compartment or share a low table and sunshine with others by the window tatami area. You can even sit directly on the stairs—for this, the store thoughtfully provides portable cushions.

The owner has a fondness for cold drinks, so there are many cold brew choices available here, featuring the integration of fruit juice and cold brew, which tastes fresh and refreshing. The owner says that although making cold brew takes a long time, “good things are worth waiting for.”

Le Seeds Coffee

  • Black and gray color scheme
  • Frequent new bean offerings
  • French pastries
  • Deliciously unique cocktails and distinctive filtered Americano

In the not-so-large space of Le Seeds Coffee, all the soft furnishings are in a black and gray color scheme, giving a feeling more suited to a bar. But from the ubiquitous logo—two coffee beans and sprouts growing from two clasped hands—it’s clear that the owner has their own requirements for coffee beans.

The logo also includes the word “patisserie” (French pastry)—the owner used to be a French pastry chef, so you can trust the quality of the desserts here.

The owner uses a unique filtering method to make the Americano taste purer and cleaner. They will actively ask customers for feedback on the taste of the coffee and remind them that the store will frequently offer new beans.

When we visited, we tasted two wonderfully flavored cocktails: Banana Magnolia, with a distinct banana sweetness on the palate and a magnolia aftertaste; and Earl Grey Apricot, which was more refreshing than expected. As summer arrives, we recommend you try the cold brew.

VOYAGE COFFEE (Sanlihe Park Store)

  • By the river
  • Under the peach blossom tree
  • Reading
  • Healing even if you only sit for a while

It’s hard to imagine that such a coffee shop exists in the city, deep in the hutongs, by a stream, under a peach blossom tree. There are magazines and coffee, wild ducks swimming in the water, and the sound of roosters crowing from somewhere. So, even though we’ve had VOYAGE’s coffee countless times, the location of this Sanlihe store is still a must-visit.

In addition to the scenery in front of the door, there are two intriguing little details in the building itself: the narrow windows on the hutong walls facing both sides, just at eye level, allowing passersby to catch a glimpse of the scene inside the store from the side, and also giving customers sitting inside an extra perspective to look outward.

If you can’t get a spot by the river due to the crowds, then go sit inside, where you’ll be accompanied by a wall full of magazines and a different kind of scenery.

Wei Shui Coffee

  • Self-roasted beans
  • Hidden menu
  • Community vibe
  • Like drinking coffee in the owner’s kitchen

Wei Shui Coffee has an irresistible storefront—gray tiled roof, wood texture, straw mats, and the warm yellow lighting shining through the glass windows.

Its physically “small” space doesn’t bother you at all, especially when you want to enjoy a good cup of coffee alone. You can sit at the spacious and comfortable bar, watch the dappled tree shadows on Xixinglong Street outside the window, and chat casually with the owner who has just the right level of talkativeness.

The owner handles almost all the work by himself, and every Tuesday, the store’s day off, is his roasting day. The beans are frequently changed, so instead of making a paper menu, you can either scan the code to see what new beans are available or chat to discover the hidden menu.

“Warmth” is the word customers most often use to describe Wei Shui: the casual and friendly display is like the owner’s own kitchen, there are so many regular customers that it exudes a “neighborhood coffee shop” atmosphere, and the owner will naturally pass over the ground beans for you to smell the aroma after grinding…

CABO Coffee

  • Rough texture
  • Zero distance
  • World flavors
  • Authentic “Australian experience”

CABO Coffee is a great place to taste Australian flavors near the Temple of Heaven. The owner, who once worked at Three Beans in Australia, chose to start his own coffee career after returning to China. Whether it’s Melbourne Iced Latte or Tasmanian Dirty, they all embody his personal experience in Australia.

CABO Coffee has ample indoor and outdoor space, with ubiquitous warm green revealing a touch of casual cuteness in the industrial roughness. In the warm breeze, you can sit with friends on the outdoor canvas lounge chairs and chat, drinking Sydney Dirty with ice cream and Beach Specials. The “gulp-worthy” Dirty blends in sweetness, while the Beach Special combines the freshness of pineapple, bubbles, and coffee, giving you a taste of midsummer in advance. The indoor space is divided into three areas, not only suitable for friends to sit in twos and threes but also for experiencing alone.

The relationship between CABO Coffee and its customers is also quite wonderful. The staff are busy, but when you leave, they will definitely say goodbye like friends, looking forward to your next visit.

CENCHI Coffee (Dongsi Store)

  • Open bar
  • Shiba Inu
  • Lazy Shiba Inu and experienced barista

Dongsi and Nanluoguxiang are the most competitive areas for coffee shops, and CÉNCHI has quickly gained favor here in a short time. The Shiba Inu at the door, unafraid of strangers, has played no small part. Its name is Doubanjiang (Soybean Paste), and it’s the most talked-about part of CÉNCHI on social networks.

The store has an overall square layout, with seats set against the walls on both sides, two tables at the innermost part, and a large square table near the store entrance. In the center of the store is an open square bar area where customers can see the baristas at work. This also brings the baristas and customers closer, facilitating communication and making it easier to convey the baristas’ philosophy.

There is a long bench and several seat cushions at the entrance of CÉNCHI, often filled with people. This is a lazy moment that belongs to Beijing. Coffee customers with pets often sit at the door drinking a cup. This is a pet-friendly coffee shop, and you can also bring pets into the store—as long as they don’t fight with Doubanjiang.

Greet Caffee Bar

  • The person who greets
  • Community
  • Random pour-over beans
  • Warm details
  • A chance to be drawn on the wall upon entering

Greet Caffee Bar is like a magical little house that would appear deep in the forest in a fairy tale: pointed roof, gray brick walls, glass door with colorful graffiti…

To the left of the entrance is also a huge pull-out floor-to-ceiling window. When the weather is nice, the owner will open the window to let the sunlight shine directly into the room.

The wooden open bar and the handcrafted table filled with machines bring a friendly atmosphere to the entire space. The owner, Bai Xiaodong, stands in the middle making drinks and greeting customers casually. Even the pour-over here is called “Beans of Chance,” with beans personally selected by the owner.

The owner’s “little touches” can be seen everywhere: the different hand-painted cards that come with the drinks, the stickers on the coffee machine, the storage space under the long seat. The owner says that the wall paintings are all of customers who left a deep impression on him. There are only a dozen or so now, but in the future, he wants to fill the canvas.

The store name “The Person Who Greets” comes from the poem of the same name by Borges: “The one who greets is always two, they have never met, and will not meet again.” The owner feels that this is a good metaphor for his relationship with most customers, which is “only a one-time encounter”—as he says this, he even raises the filter he just used for pour-over and asks if it looks like he’s greeting with coffee grounds.

Firefly Coffee (Baitasi Store)

  • Terrace
  • Adorable details
  • Hand-drawn menu
  • A cozy little shop, accompanied by a black cat

Walking in Xicha, you will pass by a window that is pushed open and decorated with fresh flowers. Through it, you can see colorful murals inside, with fairy-tale-style ornaments and fluffy teddy bears all greeting you. This is Firefly Coffee, which emphasizes a warm atmosphere.

The cafe’s main entrance is relatively hidden, located in Gongmenkou Santiao on the left. Entering and turning left leads to the indoor area, where the blackboard behind the bar handwrites the coffee and light meal menu, all named in a very cute and warm way, such as “Osmanthus Warmth,” “Firefly Matcha,” or “Protein-Packed Beef Double Egg Sandwich.”

After ordering, you can go directly to the small but charming terrace on the second floor to sit. The terrace is adorned with fresh flowers, sunflowers, and lush green plants, while the golden yellow begonia from the neighboring courtyard directly stretches over, setting off the White Pagoda.

Muse Coffee

  • Beijing specials
  • Migration and inheritance
  • A small upgrade for a window coffee shop

Muse Coffee was once a window coffee shop on Di’anmen East Street. At the end of August last year, with the closure of the old store and the construction of the new one, this coffee shop that “moved from east to west” finally had a space for seating.

Compared to the already very “competitive” coffee shops in the Baitasi area, Muse, with only one floor (no terrace) and a capacity for at most six or seven customers, can only be considered a “small shop.”

However, the window design similar to the old store, the coffee machine, decorations, wall paintings, hydrangeas, and blue road signs brought from Di’anmen are all solidly recording its step-by-step history.

The owner, Luis, runs this small shop with the same dedication as always. Many customers who frequented the old store in Dongcheng District have followed him to Xicheng, looking out at the hutongs and the not-too-distant White Pagoda, everything is worth looking forward to.

M Sweetie Cake (Baitasi Store)

  • Desserts
  • Traditional courtyard
  • “Life is bitter, M is sweet”

M Sweetie Cake uses glass to create its unique sense of transparency in the old hutongs of Gongmenkou with gray brick walls.

“M” means “us” in old Beijing dialect. Although it is not commonly used today, it still sounds very friendly, just like this small shop that blends seamlessly with the hutongs.

Stepping inside, the bar is on the left, and an indoor space is on the right. Continuing to push the door to the very back, a surrounding dark wood seating area is filled with many books and magazines. Here, you can see the interplay of light and shadow, and the sense of time passing is greatly weakened.

The outdoor courtyard has rustic bamboo chairs and stone brick flooring. The glass in the store has a very high light transmittance, like a glass greenhouse. Sitting in the courtyard, you can see the green plants in the corner and the hazy plant reflections on the glass.

The signature here is the wide variety of handmade cakes: the butter cake base of the red velvet cake has a substantial but not hard texture, and the cream is sweet but not greasy; the “boozy cake” mojito lime cake includes lime strips, mint crumbs, and a small amount of white rum in the cake to mimic the flavor of the mojito cocktail.

Following the escalator up to the terrace that can accommodate up to three people at a time, you can see the spire of the White Pagoda and occasionally birds flying across the sky and cats on the rooftops.

Taxi Cafe

  • Chalk wall drawings
  • Exquisite cups
  • Have a “virgin whiskey”

Taxi is hidden on one side of Funei North Street, without a prominent store sign. The store name is written in white chalk on a small sign, which is easy to miss if you don’t look carefully.

A small door connects the street and the narrow aisle where you can sit in Taxi. Old-style benches and wooden chairs are put together, forming a seating area against the wall, with a wooden bar and white bar stools on the side.

The most impressive thing in the store is the chalk writing and chalk graffiti left by customers on the cement wall, decorating the wall space in a unique way. The chalk drawing of the White Pagoda in the corner exudes a soft glow under the illumination of the old-style desk lamp.

The process of making coffee has some similarities with bartending. There is a special drink on the menu called “Virgin Whiskey,” which is a “non-alcoholic whiskey,” a cup of coffee with a “boozy flavor” served in a whiskey glass. The owner’s self-roasted good beans and pure pour-over technique allow people to experience the complex taste of richness, bitterness, and sweetness blending together.

The owner talks about the origin of the name “Taxi.” “Taxi” is a homophone for “west of the pagoda.” The store is located west of the Baitasi (White Pagoda Temple), and when the weather is good, the sunlight will shine on the west side of the Baitasi, illuminating the store.

Yao Coffee

  • Medicine
  • Terrace
  • Traditional snacks
  • White Pagoda in sight, herbal scent in the air

Before the rapid renewal of the neighborhood, the most famous thing about the Baitasi area was traditional Chinese medicine. The Baitasi Pharmacy, founded during the Tongzhi period of the Qing Dynasty, has a history of more than 140 years. Yao Coffee, which opened right next to it, is a continuation of the theme of “medicine.”

The main entrance of the cafe is not on the wide Fuchengmen Inner Street but faces the narrower Gongmenkou East Alley to the west. Just a wall away is the actual Baitasi (White Pagoda Temple). The close proximity, the red walls different from the common gray walls of hutongs, the old photos of the White Pagoda Temple inside the store, and the introduction of the visiting doctors playing on loop at the entrance all seem to indicate the store’s “legitimacy of bloodline.”

In addition to the lingering herbal scent in the nostrils when inside the store, many medicinal ingredients also appear on Yao Coffee’s menu: chenpi (dried tangerine peel) in “Autumn Charm,” magnolia flowers in “Falling Flowers,” and pear jam in “Autumn Pear.” They not only reflect the store’s philosophy of “coffee nourishing life” but also take the principle of following the seasons to the extreme.

Various desserts, including Beijing-style snacks and Western-style pastries, are also worth trying. The most popular one is naturally the molecular cuisine cake in the shape of the White Pagoda, named “Shiyong,” which is said to be the name of the neighborhood near the White Pagoda Temple as recorded in the “Map of the Great Capital of the Yuan Dynasty.”

After placing your order, you can sit on the Zen-style floor cushions inside or go up to the terrace on the third floor to look out at the White Pagoda. Although more and more people are coming here after hearing about it, there are still ways to find a quiet little space.

CHOOCHOO

  • Luxury train carriages
  • Retro details
  • Get your ticket
  • Board the train to spring

Walking along an inconspicuous hutong, you will reach a slightly crowded intersection. A wooden revolving door will appear in front of you, as if it were a product of time travel. This is the entrance to CHOOCHOO, and the large clock on the door seems to remind you to hurry up and enter the station, don’t be late. “Choochoo—” is the sound of a train whistle.

Opening a luxury train-themed cafe was the owners’ idea to make the best use of the long and narrow space. The interior details were quickly filled: arched ceilings, carriage-style partitions, brass-colored seat tags, and high stacks of luggage next to the bar.

After ordering at the Ticket Office, you will receive a train ticket, with different colors each week. In addition to carefully selected Yirgacheffe Italian beans, you can also try the special drink “Rich Man Missed the Train.” If you still remember the story of “Murder on the Orient Express,” don’t worry, no tense murder will happen here (because the disliked rich man didn’t get on the train at all).

As conveyed by this cup of coffee mixed with tropical fruit flavors, CHOOCHOO hopes to bring customers a sense of relaxation and comfort. Even if the carriages are full, you can still lean against the window sill with friends, look at the scenery under the green velvet curtains, and enjoy a cup of coffee until the train arrives at the station.

Geez Cafe

  • Self-grown vegetable garden
  • Affogato
  • A quiet spot in a bustling area
  • A cool place hidden in the shade of greenery

“A quiet spot in a bustling area” and “a secluded path leading to a tranquil place” are the best descriptions of Geez Cafe. It’s hard to imagine that such a peaceful place still exists near Sanlitun.

Located within a park, the yellow building housing the cafe is surrounded by a whole piece of midsummer greenery. Only when you get closer and see a half-open wooden window, wooden stools, and camping chairs can you confirm that you’ve come to the right place. Next to the stone path at the entrance, a small vegetable garden is sectioned off, where various vegetables and flowers are planted. On the other side of the garden, there is a cute wooden sign with “caì” (vegetable) and a puppy drawn on it.

Natural light and warm yellow light blend harmoniously indoors. The recommended affogato, with ice cream milk and coffee aroma, is particularly satisfying.

There are four special blends, named after the four seasons. The one called Summer has lemon juice and tonic water added, reminiscent of the recipe for a gin and tonic, but of course, the base of this drink is espresso.

Sitting in the shade of greenery here, or sitting by the window drinking water from a wine bottle, you can cool down both your head and body in the summer cicada chirps.

📍 East of the intersection of Sanlitun North Street and West 5th Street, Chaoyang District

Still Coffee

  • Located in a community
  • White window
  • Takeaway coffee
  • Take your coffee as soon as the bell rings

Still Coffee is situated in the Baijiazhuang community, just a stone’s throw away from the bustling Sanlitun Taikoo Li. Here, the neighborhood and community life converge. Under the round arches, the store is like a rest stop, mainly focusing on takeaway.

The letters on the cup hide a cat and rising steam from the coffee, indicating that Still Coffee can complete a refreshing moment in a sunny day. “Heartache” is one of the most popular drinks at Still Coffee. As a specialty drink, it combines the flavors of Taiwanese green kumquat and espresso, creating a fresh taste. Other categories are also playful, such as the pour-over “Blackberry Queen.”

The way the coffee is served is unique: a sliding rail is laid in the gap between the preparation area and the seating area. When the bell rings, your coffee will slowly “walk” towards you.

Although it adopts a stall-style format, Still Coffee still provides a small number of indoor seats for short stays. The blue-screened skylight window sheds bright sunlight, and Monstera deliciosa and lemon trees are placed in the corners of the walls.

Cafe Clark (Huafang Yicheng Store)

  • Old shop
  • Kissaten
  • Antiques
  • Travel back to a Showa-era Western-style cafe in a second

Push open the door of Café Clark, and you’ll know that the phrase “travel back to a Showa-era Western-style cafe in a second” on Xiaohongshu is not deceiving.

This is probably because the owner, Clark, has been constantly visiting and studying in Japan and Europe for more than a decade before and after opening the store, and has been deeply influenced by Showa-era cafes in Japan. There, coffee masters “still stand at the bar in their 70s and 80s, using the simplest tools,” and the appearance is even more beautiful and exquisite. He doesn’t mind admitting that when he was still in the animation industry, he simply started drinking coffee because of the visuals of Japanese cafes.

Making good coffee is not easy. The menu focuses on pour-over and espresso, but there is a Clark’s Cat, which allows Clark, who was an animator, to continue his passion. Since 2020, he has started roasting his own beans. In order to find satisfactory beans and their best expressiveness, he has tried and failed many times. Clark also trains baristas on a yearly basis, insisting on tasting every cup of coffee served…

However, just having good products is not enough. Clark has always been obsessed with the visuals of the store. Most of the seats are original antiques. They are expensive, but “only original pieces can give people the right feeling.” Clark believes that his customers appreciate this. From the antique cups, lamps, to door handles, each piece was carried back by Clark from all over the world, filling the initially minimalist-decorated space into a “vintage miscellaneous store” in the customers’ words.
