Recently, the ninth batch of China’s 20th Century Architectural Heritage project recommendation list was announced, with a total of 102 items. Among them, Shanghai has 8 projects on the list, including the Green House designed by László Hudec, the modern building complex of the University of Shanghai, the former Shanghai Special Municipal Government Building, and the Tao Fen Memorial Hall.


1.Former Shanghai Special Municipal Government Building

The former Shanghai Special Municipal Government Building is now the office building of Shanghai University of Sport. On September 25, 1989, it was listed as one of Shanghai’s fifth batch of cultural relics protection units.

The Green House was originally the residence of Wu Tongwen, the “Paint King”. It was the “final masterpiece” of László Hudec’s private residence design in Shanghai. In 1994, the entire building was announced as one of Shanghai’s excellent modern architectural protection units.

4.Shanghai Federation of Literary and Art Circles Office Building

No. 238, West Yan’an Road, Jing’an District, is the well-known “Old Building of the Federation of Literary and Art Circles” in Shanghai’s literary and art circles. It was first built in the mid-1920s. Since 1950, it has been taken over by the Municipal Federation of Literary and Art Circles and has been used as its office building. In 1994, the building was announced as one of Shanghai’s second batch of excellent historical buildings.

5.Sun Ke’s Residence

6.Shanghai Lianyi Building

The construction of the Lianyi Building started in March 1984 and was completed in May 1985, taking only 14 months, which was 22 months ahead of the scheduled construction period. In 1985, this was the first building in Shanghai to exceed 100 meters in height, and it was also the starting point of Shanghai’s super high-rise buildings.

7.Tao Fen Memorial Hall

The architectural style of the Tao Fen Memorial Hall is a new type of alleyway residential building with French-style characteristics. It was built in 1923 and has a three-story brick and wood structure. In May 1959, it was announced as a cultural relic protection unit in Shanghai.

No. 54 was the place where Mr. Tao Fen lived with his family from 1930 to 1936. In 1956, it was repaired by the Municipal People’s Committee and served as Tao Fen’s former residence for posterity to visit and commemorate. It still maintains the original appearance of the 1930s. No. 53 is the exhibition hall of the Tao Fen Memorial Hall, which was officially opened to the public on the 63rd anniversary of Mr. Tao Fen’s birth.
